Photo Post Location 18 . Strathmashie

Picture the Picts

We know little about the Picts, but we do know that in the Black Wood, west of the photo post they built the stunning Pictish Fort of Dun da Lamh. From this post you are looking across Strathmashie. At this post you will be recording broad scale changes in the forest and also regenerating broadleaves along the river corridor. You will see Strathmashie house a 19th century shooting lodge and the cottages alongside the A82 which were built by the Forestry Commission in the 1950s to house forest workers. Strathmashie Wood is now a community forest run in partnership between Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) and the Laggan Forest Trust. The forest around you hides a wealth of interest. As well as the pictish fort hidden within the woods in front of you are the remains of Druim an Aird township.

“A rather cloudy day - but a good spot to stop to take a photo before climbing up to the historic fort at Dun da Lamh.”
